BREAKWIND VILLAGE OUTSKIRTS, OSTRIVA

“I miss the banyous. They can get nice and warm, and traveling on a giant sloth’s back was way certainly easier than trudging through the snow,” Tarla said with a pout.

I agreed with her, even if I couldn’t admit it in so many words.

The new snowshoes my minions crafted made the going much easier, that was certain. But it was more mark of how difficult would have been otherwise.

“At least we finally made it. And who would’ve thought that so many places on Ostriva to use the Nordan signal flag system? It doesn’t get much more remote than a snow biome on another planet,” I said as I rubbed some warmth into my wife’s back.

The living among us stood on the top of a small rise overlooking a tightly clustered town in the snow below us. Judging from how many houses were set with glowing windows, I guessed it could hold twenty thousand or so. That did make it a far cry from the sprawling metropolises we’d seen in the lava region, let alone Clarus. But what it lacked in size, it definitely making up for in quaintness.

Hundreds of Swiss Alps style houses clustered together in little groups on the outskirts. These clusters were themselves clustered together to form the larger village. All in all, it resembled the layout of many lava region towns a good deal.

Snow clung to slanting roofs and icicles hung from the archways above the doors. Clusters of huge, winter style pine trees sprouted up in the little parks which stood in the middle of some of the houses, and picturesque lanterns burned in nearly every window.

I gave a finger snap and exclaimed, “The village is arranged to look like a snowflake. That has to be intentional, right?”

To my right, Bell hugged her furs tighter around her neck and shrugged. “Could be. Looks awfully pretty, though, doesn’t it? A lot nicer than the rocky buildings in the lava region.” She sniffled and rubbed some mucus away from her nose. “I’m still ready to get back to normal temperatures again though. The hot was too hot, and the cold is way too cold!”

Tarla bobbed her head in agreement, and I fought back a snicker. I wanted to make a joke about the three little bears and the porridge, but I doubted that that particular German fairytale had originally sprang from Nordan or Ostrava. Compared to the centaurs, fairies, kobolds, rasker, and the like three bears seemed downright ordinary.

At the town’s center, a three-story castle type building had just extended a yellow flag from its topmost tower.

Tarla gave a head nod at the location and asked, “What do you think that is?”

She extended a finger towards the tower, and I squinted down at it before realizing a big fuzzy shape was standing on the flat, rightmost tower. With the light snowfall, it was extremely difficult to tell for certain, and I pulled the spyglass from my pocket to examine it closer.
